Friday August 21 at 1pm. As we celebrate our 85th Anniversary, we continue its’ spirit of community as well as share the joy that music brings the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra introduces Music Around the City- Orchestra Pop-Ups. The pop-ups are a series of outdoor mini 20-minute performances by the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra musicians to honor our community’s front line and essential workers as well as give back a little joy during these stressful times.

Friday August 21 at 6pm. Michigan Opera Theatre in partnership with Detroit Parks & Recreation presents Opera In The Park. Enjoy a free one-hour performance from members of our MOT Studio and MOT Touring Ensemble, including an accessible mix of favorites from Opera, Broadway and the American Songbook!

Saturday October 24.  Our virtual concert opens with the well-known Adagio for organ and strings by Italian Baroque composer Albinoni. Then follows a vigorous Concerto for String Orchestra by Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz, which she wrote in 1948, and the concert ends with one of Mozart’s best loved pieces for orchestra, his Symphony no. 40 in G minor.

Khatchaturian Concerto

On February 13, 2021 join the SBSO on a memorable concert featuring Berlioz’s monumental programmatic work: Symphonie Fantastique! This symphony was described by Leonard Bernstein as “the first musical expedition into psychedelia because of its hallucinatory and dream-like nature”. The concert also includes Khachaturian’s exciting violin concerto featuring SBSO concertmaster, Eliot Heaton.

In lieu of an in-person festival, Des Moines Metro Opera is teaming up with our friends at Iowa PBS to share online and televised presentations of our recent productions of Billy BuddRusalkaManonLe Comte Ory and Bon Appétit! These broadcasts will serve as the centerpieces of our transformed 2020 Virtual Festival and will be supplemented by artist recitals, cast reunions, interviews, prelude talks, and digital versions of annual DMMO events. To share these fantastic productions with audiences around the world is the realization of a long-held dream.

Eliot and his wife Ran Cheng make premier recordings of violin duos for the American Composers Alliance. Recordings include Leon Stein's Sonatina and Edward Jacob's On Balance.
